How To Keep Your Drain Working Properly

plumbingClogged drains are one of the most common plumbing issues in every home. Homeowners are experiencing a big inconvenience because of this issue. Drains, unlike any part of your plumbing system, has a higher chance of dealing with daily wear and tear because they function as filters. They filter out things like cooking grease, hair, coffee grounds, soap scum, and many other things you use daily. Eventually, your drain will become clogged due to the accumulation of these things giving you trouble.

So how do you keep your drain working properly? Apart from cleaning it regularly, you also need to avoid having a clogged drain by making sure you are not throwing off the system. Here are ways on how you can dispose of those things instead of just throwing them in your sink or your toilet:

  1. Refrain from using chemical drain cleaners

Some of us would run straight to the nearest store to buy drain cleaners when we encounter clogged drains. However, little did you know that chemical-based drain cleaners may cause more damage to your pipes. Some drain cleaners contain chemicals that react negatively to aluminum and weaken it, while some can also solidify inside your pipers and may cause more clogging.

  1. Invest in a drain strainer

One of the most common culprits of clogged drains, especially in the bathroom, is your hair. If you want to avoid having problems with a clogged drain due to your hair, then it would be best to put a drain strainer on it. Choose a strainer that is made of plastic or materials that won’t get rusty and are easy to clean.

  1. Keep the grease away from your pipes

You know that grease liquifies when heated but will also solidify as it cools down. When you throw away grease into your sink, it may solidify into a mass and cause a clog in your pipes. When you experience this, start running very hot water down your drain. If this doesn’t solve the problem, squirt a dish detergent into the drain, wait for a few minutes and then add more hot water.

  1. Know when to call a plumber

You might think that clogged drain is an issue that can be resolved with your skills alone. However, if you have you applied all your DIY knowledge and you still get the same problem every now and then, then you might like to have your drainage system checked by a professional plumber such as the highly skilled professionals at Woodbridge Plumbing.

Doing this can decrease your chances of getting a clogged drain.
